March 22 , 2002 - Interview with Bowling Press Pro

March 22nd, 2002:

BPP: What have you been doing since the US Open last December?
ALETA: I took two months off of bowling to clear my head. I am working on co-developing a wide-ranged coaching program in conjunction with Community Bowling Centers. Michelle Mullen and I have gone into business as Your Bowling Coach, developing bowling coaching throughout various centers in metro Detroit.

BPP: What is Your Bowling Coach?

ALETA:
Your Bowling Coach is a coaching company that we have designed to provide a comprehensive menu of coaching programs to bowlers of all skill, age and interest levels, much like lesson programs at the local golfing pro shop, driving range or golf course. 'Your Bowling Coach' will make coaching available in the local bowling centers, for all bowlers.

BPP:
Why have you decided to focus on coaching?

ALETA:
With coaching, I think bowlers will understand the game better and have more fun doing it. A lot of my career has been based on good coaching which has allowed me to understand the game better and play it better. In my opinion, no one is spared coaching.

BPP:
Do you enjoy coaching?

ALETA:
I love coaching. I love seeing people improve and be so happy bowling.

BPP:
Have you seen good results from coaching?

ALETA:
Oh, yeah. We receive letters from e-mail that let us know how well bowlers are doing, and it is awesome. Our pupils' successes go from raising an average 15 pins to shooting their first 700 series ever. And the bowlers who have sessions with us and then win money in pots or in tournaments is really incredible. Some of our favorite stories are those where bowlers who have wanted to quit (because they were bowling so bad for so long) but get help and enjoy bowling again. Also pleasing to us are the bowlers who get rid of sore muscle and joint pain as a result of working on better form. We just love what we do to help bowlers be free of their pain and bowl better again.

BPP:
How long have you been coaching?

ALETA:
About 16 years.

BPP:
Do you think you will enjoy coaching more full-time?

ALETA:
Yes. I enjoy the programs we are doing now.we see many different types of bowlers.men, children, women, seniors. We now have programs designed for all bowlers - from bowlers who have never bowled before to scratch bowlers. And I enjoy teaching different parts of the game every day.
We teach bowlers about so many things - from how they grip the ball, how to have better timing, and how to develop a looser armswing. Also, we teach bowlers how to have a better finish position, and how to improve their release. Equally important, we teach bowlers how to get their spares. Picking up more spares is a huge way to improve your average. We also help bowlers with lane play and multiple releases, including different axis' of rotation, that may include suggesting a different ball drilling with different layouts for their type of game."

BPP:
Does your experience help you coach better?

ALETA:
"Absolutely. For both Michelle and me. She had decided to dive into coaching full force sooner than I have, but we do draw from tour experience. How do you not? Being bowlers ourselves, we realize what it is like to make changes, how different it feels and how different it can be to learn new things. And having the fortune to be around so many great coaches and leading people in the industry, we have access to the latest in technology and trends in ball fitting and equipment. And that's not to mention the network we have with the best coaches in the world."

BPP:
Are you still bowling?

ALETA:
"Yeah. Right now, I bowl my league once a week. Next week I am going to try to find time to bowl a little more. We are going to bowl the first couple stops on tour that begin in May, then we will resume teaching over the summer. So, I plan on bowling these stops and the majors this year. I've had a good career, but I feel it's time to start on the next phase of my life."
