Using a Wrist Guard
"For Support and To Enhance Ball Roll"
-Wrist guards provide firm support for the bowler whose wrist breaks back during the swing and release
-Specific wrist guards are also recommended to achieve a better, more effective ball roll
-
Some wrist guards alter your span (change your ball fit) and you need to be measured with them on
Many bowlers want to try a wrist guard but don't know which one to use. Different wrist guards have different effects on release. Some make you rotate more, some offer more support than others, and some help you get out of the thumb hole easier to create better roll on the ball. Choosing a proper wrist guard depends on what your tendency is and what the necessary correction would be.
It is highly recommended that you are professionally guided in your choice of wrist guard. This is important. For one, to be sure you are selecting the right one for your game; also, because some require a change in your ball fit (as they affect your hand span), due to the way they sit on your hand. This is important to maintain proper grip pressure (for a consistent armswing) and to avoid injury. Bowlers who randomly pick up different wrist guards without understanding what they are designed to do, and without realizing that they may alter the way the ball fits often have a poor experience with them.
At Aleta Sill's Bowling World, we like to let bowlers try wrist guards before they buy them, when in doubt.
